Elliott G. Heard, Jr. Essay Contest

Each year the Gloucester County Bar Foundation holds the Elliott G. Heard, Jr. Essay Contest. The Gloucester County Bar Foundation conducts the essay contest and seeks annual sponsorship donations through bar association members, corporations and law firms. Student essays are due in April. Awards for the essay contest are given out at the annual Law Day Luncheon. Any High School student attending a school in Gloucester County is eligible to participate.

The purpose of the essay contest is to encourage students to learn about the law and the pursuit of justice. The students are invited to write an essay based upon a fact pattern written by the Essay Contest Committee. Students are instructed to analyze the legal issues and address arguments for and against each party's position. In 2008, the fact pattern is based upon a Second Ammendment right to own a hand gun which arose out of a case in Washington, D.C. Lawyers from the Committee review the essays submitted and rank them based upon a point system. They evaluate the writing style, research and logical analysis of the issues. The 2008 winners will receive prize money in the amounts of $300.00 for first place, $200.00 for second place and $100.00 for third place.
